A MAJOR national publicity campaign has been launched to comba drinking and driving.
The campaign, costing 01.25m and sponsored by the Departmen of Transport, started with the introduction of two new televisior commercials. They are being shown up until the begining of Jan uary, and will be supported by posters displayed throughout De cember. A commercial will also be used in cinemas until Decembe 20.
In announcing the campaign, Transport Secretary David Howe! said: "Drinking and driving remains one of our most serious prob lems." He said alcohol is a factor in at least 1,200 road deaths even year. One driver out of every three killed in road accidents ha; alcohol in his blood over the legal limit, and during the hours afte pub closing time the proportion rises to two in every three.
The new measures in the Transport Act 1981 fOr improving the lay on drinking and driving will be brought in towards the end of 1982.
