Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The majority of older trailers are heading overseas but the auctioneers report a brisk trade in late-model semis for specific UK markets.

George Alexander, Glass's Guide chief editor for CVs, says most pre-1992 flats and skeletals, curtainsiders built in the early 1990s, and refrigerated boxes up to 10 years old with decent fridge units are being snapped up for service overseas.

The domestic market is experiencing an upturn in prices on late-model, three-axle fridge trailers with a 26-pallet capacity due to short supply on the open market. Clean examples of tipping trailers are also doing well for the same reason. But demand for latemodel boxes and curtain-sided trailers is relatively weak due to competitive prices on new products.

Glance through the auction section in CM'S classified ads and you'll find a growing number of recent trailers up for grabs. Owner-driver Neil 'Thomas decided against hiring or buying new and went to the auctions, picking up a 2002 Schmitz CargobullTrailer triaxle curtainsider.

"I won't tell you what I paid for it or where I picked it up," he says,"but it was a competitive price, and that was my first auction.

"Over the space of 12 months it will have paid for itself. Otherwise you're throwing away money on rental or lease."

CVA has several late-year trailers due to go under the hammer; Manheim Auctions also sells trailers in large numbers and has just announced that a large number of skeletals are due to go under the hammer. •
