SOUTHERN IRELAND'S Cavan County Council in the Irish Republic has teamed up with the Irish police to crack down on illegal waste movements.
Smuggling waste into Northern Ireland for illegal dumping has become a multi-million-pound racket. Most of the waste is said to originate in the far south of the country, passing through Monaghan and Cavan on its way north. Monaghan County Council has been running checkpoints for a couple of years.
"We stop any lorry that looks like it might be carrying waste," says Michael Mussi of Cavan's Waste Management Department. "What we have detected so far is nothing really sinister; it mostly concerned paperwork not being fully in order."
