Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Daihatsu launches its substan

tially revised Fourtrak commercial this month, as revealed in Commercial Motor (CM 1-7 July). The new model will be known as the Fourtrak Fieldman and the major change is to the suspension. Replacing the front and rear leaf sprung live axles is a part independent system. The front gets double wishbones with torsion bar springing and an anti-roll bar. At the rear, a live axle is retained with five link coil sprung suspension and anti-roll bar.

The vehicle is 110mm wider than its predecessor to accommodate the wider track, up from 1,300mm to 1,430mm at the front and 1,530mm at the rear. The changes are aimed at improved stability. Fatter wheelarches accommodate the extra width. Re-designed bumpers complete the external changes.

Inside, the dashboard has been updated and new front bucket seats replace the previous types. Refinement should improve with the adoption of fluid engine mounts and a greater capacity exhaust system using flexible pipe. Fuel consumption should also benefit from the fitting of modified fuel injectors to the 2.8 litre diesel engine.

Safety has also been enhanced with a collapsible steering column, larger rear brake drums and brake servo. Three models form the Fourtrak Fieldman lineup: two SWB models, DS and TDS and one LWB model, the TDL. GVW increases to 2,235kg for all models, giving payloads, with a 75kg driver, of 600kg, 570kg and 490kg respectively.

Towing capacity is up too: the Fieldman will tow a 3.5 tonne braked trailer.

All models are powered by the same indirectinjection 2.8-litre diesel, but the TDS and TDL benefit from chargecooling, boosting power output to 75kW (101hp) at 3,400rpm and 245Nm (1811bft) of torque at 1,900rpm. The naturally-aspirated DS produces 54kW (72hp) and 170Nm (125Ibft) respectively.

Like its predecessor, the Fieldman is based on the passenger variant, now known as the Fourtrak Independent. Prices begin at £10,750 (ex-VAT) for the DS, rising to £12,495 (ex-VAT) for the TDL.
