by Juliet Parish • Exel Logistics Newstlow has bowed to pressure from its drivers' union to impose an extra 12 working days a year instead of up to 17 it had originally planned.

Last week the newspaper distributor settled the deal for 370 drivers still working on a fouryear-old rota system at seven of eight Newsflow depots.

From 9 August the drivers will be put on a five days on and two off roster over a seven-week cycle, getting the same wage for their current four days on and two off.

The compromise, proposed by the Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers Union, ends six weeks of negotiations. Last month nearly 90% of staff voted for industrial action against the proposed 16 to 17 extra days per year.

But despite the initial "massive resistance" it is satisfied with the settlement: about 60 drivers who joined the firm this year are already on the new roster.

Newsflow's general manager Dave Hawkins says the change was inevitable: "We do recognise it is a major change in terms and conditions for employees but it is what this business needs. We need to reduce costs to remain competitive in this part of the market sector."

Newsflow drivers based at the Basildon depot will not be put on the new contract—they distribute a regional newspaper and continue working Monday to Friday.
