DRIVERS' hours regulations that could decimate pte bus services are expected to be modified before Britain accepts the new rules.

Association of Metropolitan Authorities spokesman David Silverman expects that the rules will be altered to exclude all stage service drivers and hopes that works and schools services buses will also be excluded.

"We know that,at the request of the Department of Transport, the EEC is considering amendments to the regulation. If local bus services are exempted then our problems will be eased," said Mr Silverman.

But even if the regulation is not modified then the authorities will need at least one year and probably two to sort out their procedures to accommodate the EEC rules.

This week a DTP spokesman told CM that there were objections from the French to the gradual introduction of the rules but that the next meeting to sort out the situation would be in October.
