A Series of Attractive Runs Organized By a Railway Company in Conjunction with a Coaching Concern.

WHILST considerable rivalry otists between the road and rail passenger carrying interests, it ha 6 been argued that there is ample scope for co•ordina• tion rather than competition, and that the London and North Eastern ftailway Co., Ltd., are desirous of fostering lo the fullest possible extent the operation of joint rail-road excursions, is proved . by-their recent departures in this direc,

tion. For quite a considerable period they have operated with encouraging results a series Of rail-motor coach tours in conjunction with Messrs. Robinson— a large Scarborough motor coaching company—and a more recent and even more comprehensive development indicates that the company are paying particular attention to this new phase of passenger-carrying transport.

Since the commencement of the current coaching season they have inaugurated a number of attractive rail-motorsteamer tours to the English Lake District. Lake Ullswater, which is sometimes described as the "English Lucerne," is the venue of the excursions, and really cheap rates are quoted.

In connection with these tours passen gers proceed to Penrith by train, being met there by motor coaches (by arrangement with the Ullswater Navigation and Transit Co.) and then conveyed by road to Pooley Bridge, situated at one of the lakes. There they board comfortable and speedy yachts, and make a complete circuit of the lake, calling at Patterdale at the extreme end.

Coaches from Pooley Bridge leave in time to connect with departing trains in order to convey excursionists back to their homes. In addition to the ordinary ticket each tourist on booking receives a perforated slip covering the coach and steamer portions of the trip. The through return fare from Newcastle is 13s. 6d. third class, and charges from other centres are in proportion.
