TRACTION DEVICE FOR VE HICLES.—Viguie.—No. 15,499, dated under Convention, 12th May, 1908.— This invention relates to a traction de vice, which is adapted to be fitted to a horse-drawn vehicle in place of the usual forecarriage as described in specification No. 15.277 of 1908. The present improvement consists in the provision of a device having four wheels which is especially applicable to light delivery vans, lorries, etc STEAM ENGINE. — Hone. — Nu. 12,869, dated 16th June, 1908.—According to this invention, steam engines of the single-acting type are so constructed that the steam actuates the piston by impact, thereby resulting in great economy in steam. The engine may have one or more cylinders, with trunk pistons working therein, and driving a crankshaft through connecting rods in the usual manner. In the head of the cylinder an inlet portis situated, which is controlled by a mechanically-operated valve, means being provided to retard the moment of opening the valve. In the wall of the cylinder exhaust ports are provided and arranged to be uncovered by the piston before the end of its working stroke.

Thele exhaust ports lead into an annular chamber connected with an air pump for maintaining a vacuum in said chamber. When this engine is started or is running slowly, it is driven by the pressure and expansion of the steam ; but when it has obtained a certain speed, the timt at which the admission valve is opened is retarded so that the steam acts on the pistons when the cranks are at their maximum leverage, and, as the steam is immediately cut off again, and the exhaust ports opened, the steam acts by impact only, the result being great economy in the consumption of steam.

HA ND AND FEET SHIELD.Newman—No. 14,806, dated 13th July, 1908.—This invention relates to a shield for protecting the hands and feet. It is of the type described in the specification of Patent No. 19,980/1907. The frame of the device is supported by a bracket which is attached to the steering column. This frame supports a waterproof covering which extends from the footboard over the steering handle. In order to enable the driver to see the control gear on the steering wheel a portion of the waterproof covering is made of transparent material. The device is suitably hinged so that it may be adjusted to any size of steering handle, and also so that it may be folded when not in use.

SPARE WHEELS. — Harper. — No. 22,668, dated 26th October, 1908.—This *nvention relates to devices for attach ing a spare wheel to the permanent wheel of a motor vehicle. Four clips are provided on the spare wheel, and these are adapted to engage the rim of the permanent wheel. These clips engage a screwthreaded portion of four radial rods which are rotated by suitable bevel gearing arranged in the centre of the spare wheel. It will be seen that by means of the bevel gearing all four rods will be turned simultaneously, and, consequently, the spare wheel will be held concentrically with respect to the permanent wheel.

SPRINGS. — Wightman. — No. 921, dated 14th January, 1909.—This invention relates to laminated springs, and has for its object to prevent lateral movement of the springs relatively to one another. Each spring is formed with a channel on one side and a projection on the other side, the projection of one spring engaging the channel of the other. The channels are made wider than the projections, and in the space thus provided strips of lubricating ma terial. such as a cord saturated with lubricating oil, is arranged.
