Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Earlier this year I moaned about the overpriced

substandard food served in some motorway service areas.

You might recall that Moto had charged me £9 for one of the worst breakfasts I had ever eaten. Well, not surprisingly, I’m not the only one who thinks that we are being shafted by these service areas. In fact, I think I had more reader response to that rant than anything else I’ve ever written!

With that in mind, I thought it was time Commercial Motor had a chat with some of the service area bosses. Last week I sent interview requests to the chief executives of Moto, Welcome Break, Extra and Roadchef. Well actually it was more of a challenge than a straight forward interview request. I said I’d like to conduct the interview over breakfast at one of their motorway services after they’d spent a night in a truck. To be honest, I wasn’t expecting to hear back from any of them – but was proved wrong by Welcome Break chief executive Rod McKie, who immediately accepted the challenge. So one night during the coming weeks, Rod will be kipping at Welcome Break’s South Mimms truckstop.

I considered borrowing a clapped-out old 7.5-tonner for the event, but I decided to be kind and have sorted a new sleeper cab, so he should get a decent night’s sleep. Let’s hope that nobody parks a reefer next to him, carries out a trailer swap in the middle of the night, or decides to test out the new exhaust stacks on their customised Scania at 3am! On a serious note, if you’ve got any burning questions for Rod, please email me at will.shiersraroadtransport.com. Will Shiers
