THE SCOTTISH Executive is spending £3.7m to reduce the impact of timber transport on its roads, including £2.5m on a forest haulage route for trucks.

The money. being distributed through the StrategicTimberTransport Fund (STIF), is designed to improve crumbling rural roads not built to meet the demands of Scotland's growing timber industry.

The £2.5m will divert 10,500 timber LG V movements away from communities in Eskdalemuir, Dumfries and Galloway. It is the biggest award made to date under the STTF. The money will be us to build a 4.2km sustainat transport route and strength three sections of the 8723 frc Watcarrick to Sandyford Brid and south of Boreland.
