The Hartridge /Clayton B-20-CT Truck and Bus brake test analyser marketed in this country by Leslie Hartridge Ltd., enables brakes to be tested at highway speeds. The analyser is made by the Clayton Manufacturing Co. of California, USA, and each bank of rollers is powered by a cradle-mounted 50 hp threephase motor. The unit is capable of absorbing up to 200 hp and can accommodate axles with weights up to 22,500lb.

Operated pneumatically, the load cells are connected to "null" type instruments designed to give a highly sensitive quick response. Two pressure gauges are built into a single co-axial instrument of 12in, diameter: an inner red needle shows the reaction torque of the motor on the offside, while an outer black needle is controlled by the motor on the nearside. The angle between the two needles indicates the degree of imbalance of the two wheel brakes.

Air-actuated brakes are used to lock the rollers when a vehicle is being driven on or removed from the analyser. If required means can be provided for remote control from the driver's seat or for automatic control.

Clayton and Hartridge emphasises that simulation by the analyser of a stop corresponding to a normal traffic stop, and if this is satisfactory, an emergency stop from high speed, is an all-important feature of the tester. In the first type of stop, the unit reveals any tendency of the brakes to grab, fluctuations of braking force and continuous or momentary imbalance. The second test reveals fade tendencies at high temperature levels as well as the faults mentioned. The total time for a full brake test by an experienced operator is three /four minutes.
