Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

P.O. Box 36, Clavelys Road, Warrington, Lancs.

LOOKING at the popular S-cam brake unit manufactured by Rubery-Owen and used extensively by nearly every trailer manufacturer, it will be seen that apart from worn linings the only mechanical failure which can occur is that of seizure of the moving parts. Probably the most common failing is where the shoes seize on the pivot pins, either rendering the unit inoperative or preventing it from releasing. • The problems of removing seized pivot pins are well known to every operator of vehicles using this type of brake. And, in recent months Rubery-Owen has carried out a considerable number of investigations on vehicles in the field. As a result of the findings, a conversion kit has been produced which, it is said, eliminates the seizure problem. One of the major operations required during the conversion is that of reaming the pivot-pin holes in the brake spider 0.125in. over size, and in order that operators can carry out this operation quickly and accurately. R-0 has designed a kit which can be hired.

Comprising a jig with locating mandrels and a set of three reamers, the kit ensures that the shoe assemblies are square to the camshaft when the operation is completed. Once again this equipment is aimed at speeding up the process of overhaul while at the same time retaining the utmost efficiency from the brake unit. The kit and details of the conversion are available on request from Mr. K. Wilkes, service manager of RuberyOwen-Rockwell Ltd. Cost of hiring the outfit is £2 per week plus a refundable deposit of £60. Rubery-Owen prefers operators to collect and return the kits by their own transport—the Warrington factory is quite close to M6 and conveniently situated for traffic travelling north or south to call in.
