Parkinson Cowan Heating Ltd.

Ferndale Terrace, Harrow, Middx.

The Speedyjet steam cleaners made by this company are basically electrode-type steam boilers which raise steam to provide pressure at the nozzle. The amount of steam delivered from the in-built boiler is relatively small but a suction hose connected to the gun can pick up to about 60gal of water/detergent per hour. One advantage of this type of machine is that it can be safely used in enclosed premises but on the other hand a three-phase electrical supply is required. A mixture of steam and detergent is delivered at the lance and supplies of each can be varied instantly according to the type of work being cleaned. When cleaning is finished the detergent valve is closed and the work is sprayed with dry steam only and this evaporates all surplus moisture to leave the surface dry.

There are two models of the Speedyjet, the 135 which is rated at 20 kW and the 155

which is rated at 35 kW. The higher-capacity unit is satisfactory for continuous use while the 135 was developed for operation on premises where an adequate electrical supply is not available and where a steam cleaner will not be used intensively. The only difference between the two models is in the electrodes: both measure 3ft 10.5in. by 1ft 9in. by 3ft 3.5in. high and weigh 549Ib net. The Speedyjet steam cleaners are said to have a slightly higher capital cost than comparable paraffin oil-fired units but cheaper to operate. Running cost of the model 135 are said to be about is 6d per hour and for the 155 2s 6d/3s 2d per hour.

Wickham Industrial Equipment Ltd.

Dashwood House, Old Broad ttreet, London, 5,C.2.

There are three standard Wickham steam cleaners, the Handy Dandy, the Universal and the Major Mark II. If high-pressure hotwater cleaning is preferred there is the Wickham Tempest which is said to be satisfactory for most vehicle-maintenance work although this type of unit does not give as fast a job as a steam cleaner. The big advantage, however, is that it can be used in enclosed premises because no steam vapour is given off. The price of the Tempest is £235.

The standard Handy Dandy is fired by paraffin or gas oil but propane gas and towngas models are also available. List price is £250; when the unit is mounted on a threewheel sub-frame but with castors, the price reduces to £235. Electric-motor drive for the diaphragm-type pump is standard, the motor being a 0.33 hp unit but an alternative is a petrol-engine drive which adds £45 to the price. Steam output is BOgaI of wet steam per hour and the pressure can be adjusted up to 120 p.s.i. Fuel tank capacity is 8.5gal and 9.5gal of detergent solution can be carried. Normal consumption is 2gal of paraffin or gas oil per hour and overall dimensions are 2ft 11 in. long, lft 7in. wide and 4ft Sin, high and weight on castors is 3cwt.

Output of the Universal steam cleaner is 120gal of wet steam per hour and again the pressure can be adjusted up to 120 p.s.i. Pumping and heating systems are similar to the Handy Dandy but the drive is by a 0.5 hp electric motor or petrol engine. The same firing methods as with the Handy Dandy are available and the price is £435 for threewheel version. On castors and driven by an electric motor the price is £35 cheaper and a petrol-engine can be incorporated to supply the power for £50 more. A consumption rate of 3gal paraffin or gas oil per hour is quoted and overall dimensions on castors are 3ft Sin. long, 1ft Sin, wide and 3ft 7in. high while the weight is 5cvvt. The Universal can be supplied for two-gun operation at £35 extra cost and mounting on a two-wheel trailer adds £125 to the price.

The two machines described cover requirements of most vehicle operators and the Wickham Major Mark II is a much-higher capacity machine and would be worth while only for the very large fleet where continuous use of a steam cleaner is involved. It can supply one or two guns with a total of 180gal of wet steam per hour at up to 170 p.s.i. pressure and for hot or cold water washing one gun will deliver 300gal per hour at 250 p.s. i.

The Major Mark ll is mounted on a threewheel chassis and has a 1.5 hp three-phase electric motor. It costs £798. Fuel consumption is in the region of 4gal per hour and the fuel tank holds 20gal with a detergent tank for 28gal. Overall dimensions are 2ft wide, 4ft 9in, long and 4ft 3m, high and weight is llowt.

The Wickham Tempest hot or cold watE washer is a small mobile machine mounted-o a pair of Bin. rubber-tyred wheels and a sing! castor. The 0.75 hp electric motor, diaphragm type pump, burner, 2gal paraffin tank and 2gi• detergent container are totally enclosed an maximum output is 100gal per hour at maximum pressure of 400 p.s.i. Fuel cor sumption (paraffin) is 0.5gal per hour an dimensions are 3ft 10.5in. long, 1 ft 11ir wide and 2ft Bin, high. Net weight is 2 cwt.

Another cleaner made by Wickham is on which is designed for use in conjunction wit an existing steam supply. It costs f 1 65 an has a maximum capacity of 3501b per hour c steam at a pressure between 60 and 100 p.s. A supply of 120gal per hour of cold water i required and the machine is powered b 0.5 hp electric motor.
