Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

HE increasing complexity of the motor vehicle and the nplementation of long overdue legislation which makes it nperative for operators to keep their vehicles in tip-top ondition will add in no small way to the problems faced by ensport engineers up and down the country.

As subject matter for the reviews in this annual iaintenance issue we have concentrated on equipment 'at has particular relevance to the MoT tests which ommence on July 1 this year. Vehicles must be presented a clean condition, and so we have covered steam loaners (1). And because brake systems are likely to be the lost difficult to keep in adequate repair, we have covered quipment with which faults in pressure, vacuum and ydraulic systems can be diagnosed (2), special tools for use in the overhaul of brakes (3) and finally, devices for use in testing the efficiency of the finished job (4, 5).

The results of tests carried out on a voluntary basis at those testing stations already open show in no mean way that all is not well ; failure rates have in some cases been in excess of 90 per cent and these have often been vehicles whose owners were confident that they would pass with honours.

Those operators who now appreciate what they are up against will find the items of equipment covered in this issue invaluable in reducing down time. They will also enable users to make the best use of workshop staff and assist them in their efforts to acquire first-time clearance by the testing stations.
