He became general manager in 1939, managing director in 1948, and chairman in 1956. remaining as chief executive until 1963. He was a member of the Advisory Council of the Ministry of Aircraft Production in the Second World War and was knighted for public services in 1941. The Ford annual report, published this week, pays tribute to "his dynamic leadership and complete dedication throughout a long and outstanding career".

J. A. Barke, who retired as managing director, Ford of Britain, in 1965 after a serious illness, and as vice-chairman at the end of 1967. is resigning from the board on April 16-his 65th birthday. The directors have paid tribute to Mr. Barke's ''unsparing efforts on behalf of the company" during his service extending over nearly 36 years.

J. H. Gilbert has been appointed general manager, East Kent Car Co. following the retirement of Fl. G. James who has been general manager for 20 years. Mr. Gilbert had been deputy general manager for two months.
