• An A licence was granted for only two years to Skelton Transport Ltd., Timperley, Cheshire, in Manchester on Wednesday; "In order," said Mr. A. H. Jolliffe, the NorthWestern deputy Licensing Authority, "that we can see that his present maintenance arrangements work. If they are satisfactory, then he will get his full five years".

Skelton Transport was applying for a new A licence for eight vehicles and was to surrender a five-vehicle licence issued in the North West and three vehicles licensed in the Metropolitan area.

The firm had had difficulties in obtaining premises and maintenance facilities in London, said Mr. J. A. Backhouse for the applicants. During last summer, some very unsatisfactory work had been carried out on the Northern fleet by a Manchester garage, against whom an action was now pending for defective workmanship.

After an adverse report from a vehicle examiner, it was decided last October to amalgamate the fleets in the North. A part-time employee had now been replaced by a permanent fitter who was carrying out weekly inspections of the vehicles, maintaining records and undertaking major services every 5,000 miles.

They had moved to new premises with two workshops and a covered working area for two vehicles, said Mr. D. Martin, a director of Skeltons, and drivers had been issued with instructions about reporting defects.
