Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AN instrument for bench-testing oil engine injectors is shown in patent No. 910,894, Though the general layout is well tried, the present scheme contains some valuable modifications. (Leslie Hartridge LW., Tingewick Road, Buckingham.)

The injector is inserted and covered by a hood (1) to catch the fuel spray. A hand-operated high-pressure pump (2) pressurizes the fuel for the four main tests. These are: closed leakage, open leakage, " buzz " pressure and opening pressure.

The chief feature of the present scheme is the provision of a restriction in the fuel supply from the hand pump. This is controlled by a screw-down valve (3) which compels the operator to apply the pressure at a very gradual rate of increase, and so avoid fluctuations which make the reading of the test pressures uncertain.

When testing for fuel leakage, the pump pressure is raised to a level just below that at which the injector normally operates and the. valve is then completely closed, so that the fuel is trapped in the injector. A second adjustable restriction valve is included in the pipe to the pressure gauge (4); this can be used to prevent the pointer from following transient surges and to protect the gauge mechanism.
