Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

to operate a direct bus service from pennymoor to Willington in Co. 1urham was adjourned for the second me at Spennymoor on Monday. The caring will be continued in Durham n May 6.

The two companies are Wilkinson's lotor Services, of Sedgefield, and J. nvitt and Sons, of Spennymoor. A umber of bus companies objected as ell as Durham County Council, and the aplicants objected to each other's 3plication.

The County Council objected on the -ounds that on the proposed 61-mileing route there was a bridge restricted taking 6 tons. They suggested an alterWye route which was only 54 miles

Mr. Gordon Thompson, director of 'ilkinsons, said that the company tended to use a new lightweight 31:ate.r bus weighing 3 tons 16 cwt.

Cross-examined by Mr. J. C. Forbes, Mr. Thompson admitted that after 31 passengers had boarded the bus, allowing 10 stone for each one, the total weight including conductor and driver would be 5 tons 17 cwt. He also admitted that fuel plus water would leave only cwt. to spare.

When Mr. Forbes said that nearly all passengers carried something, Mr. Thompson admitted that this would take the weight above 6 tons.

Mr. Thompson said that to keep the weight down as much as possible, the bus would have no spare wheel or tools or any standing passengers.

The manager of J. Jewitt and Sons. which runs a service on part of the route, said the company also planned to buy a lightweight bus for the route to Willington. The hearing was adjourned when both campanies' cases had been heard. The objectors' cases will be heard at the next sitting.
