Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The report of the directors of Vickers, Ltd., for the year 1931 shows a net trading profit amounting to £943,811, from which has to be deducted income tax, debenture interest and other expenses, totalling £369,318, thus leaving a balance of 1574,493. The dividends already declared for the year on the preference-share capital have absorbed 1418,190, so that, when the balance is added to the sum of £231,970 brought forward from the previous year, there is a total available of £388,273. It is recommended that this amount should be appropriated by the payment of a dividend of 5 per cent. :(less income tax) on the ordinary shares • this will account for £153,944 and leave £234,329 to be carried forward.

To Prevent Theft.

Messrs. Cook and Collis, Laindon, Essex, have produced a useful anti-theft device for vehicles, which is marketed as the Cee and Cee universal switch.

It is intended for mounting in the dashboard, so that only the facial disc, which carries a number of buttons, appears. The buttons, when depressed in a certain combination, complete the ignition circuit, but should any button be pressed in error the circuit will be broken. The combination can be altered, should this be necessary. The mechanism is simple and, of course, eliminates the need for a key.

Motor Invention Progress.

It is estimated that by the end of the March quarter of 1932 about 9,000 patent applications were filed in Greek Britain. Messrs. Hughes and Young, patent agents, of 9, Warwick Court, High Holborn, London, 17V.C.1, report that this figure is below the average of recent years, the reduction being mainly attributable to quiet times in the textile and mining industries.

So far as the motor industry is concerned, there is evidence of increasing attention to engine design ; a number of inventors is out to improve upon piston construction.

Useful Plug-testing Terminals.

The Neot plug terminals, which were introduced recently by Benton and Stone, Ltd., Bracebridge Street, Birmingham, have proved extremely useful for motorists, and now appear to be gaining popularity amongst the owners of many types of commercial vehicle.

The terminals comprise small Neonfilled tubes, protected by insulated coverings and fitted into stout brass screw caps. These are-,screwed on to the plugs and hold the high-tension leads in the ordinary way. The screw caps are deeply finned so as to provide a measure of air cooling. It will be clear that the Neot fittings provide a means for instantly telling whether all the plugs in an engine are firing regularly. Their use is superior to that of a single Neon-tube tester, because all the plugs can be observed at one time and the engine can be run slowly or at high speed to test whether, and in what conditions, any of the plugs is failing. A set of six costs 9s. and a set of four Os.

A Tyre Company's Appointment.

We are advised that Mr. B. B. Morgan, until recently the commercial manager of the Firestone Tyre and Rubber Co., Ltd., has joined the Trowbridge Tyre and Rubber Co. (1929), Ltd., in the capacity of sales manager. Mr. Morgan is well known to many large fleet operators throughout the country. Preventing Oil Wastage.

With the object of preventing the wastage of oil when filling the sump, and of reducing the time necessary for this operation, Camp and Co., 46, Oxford Road, Acocks Green, Birmingham, has placed on the market the Easypour funnel measure.

An accompanying drawing shows the device, which consists of a can equipped with a funnel capable of holding a like quantity of oil. The lubricant is measured into the container and, when the funnel orifice is inserted into the engine oil filler, the oil passes through the funnel into the power unit without waste being occasioned by overflowing. As the funnel balances itself in the orifice the mechanic can usefully be employed on some other task while the filling operation is being carried out. The pint size is marketed at a price of 3s. ed., the quart model costs 4s. ed., and the half-gallon pattern Os. 6d., in each case the postage being ed. extra.
