More of less?

Hasn't it been a strange week for the transport industry? First, Mr Prescott talks about injecting billions into providing "more reliable public transport" and second he talks about "re-regulation". This is a sort of "re-regulated, de-regulated bus service".

For those who cannot remember, the Government, in its infinite wisdom, licensed bus operators all over the country to do what larger operators were doing, thus duplicating routes. It now wants more buses and fewer cars on the road and no more two-car families in 25 years' time.

If the Government thinks before opening its gob then we might understand, but if the road ahead is knackered and subject to subsidence what would you rather be in, a ninetonne double-decker or a one-tonne car?

1 was actually wondering what the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, the Freight Transport Association and the Road I Iaulage Association think about his comments as they take some sorting out. Yours confused, dizzy and baffled.

Peter C Clark,

Durham.
