• "The tide has turned—the start of the 1970s shows that the menace of the hijack is receding." This was said by Det Chief Inspector Alistair Thomson, at Limehouse Police Station on Wednesday. He was speaking at a meeting of the Road Haulage Association vehicle security Committee.
Home Office committees studying the Problem had improved the situation considerably, said Mr Thomson, but industry itself had got to grips with the problems of lorry load security. In addition, the vehicle observer corps, operating throughout the country, had produced good recovery results while scouring the streets in their area when lorries belonging to other members were missing.
The meeting took place during "Hands Off Our Freight Week", which culminates with a demonstration of the use of helicoptors in tracking lorry thieves at the national finals of the Lorry Driver of the Year Competition at Bramcote, Northants, on Sunday.
