AFOUR-MILE motorway is planned. for Hendon, to cope with the greatly increased traffic expected to pass through the borough when the first section of the

re re

London-Yorkshi motorway opens later this year. Traffic needs in the immediate future wilt be met by improving, to dual carriageway standard, the existing A41 route between Finchley Road and Apex Corner and the Al north of Apex Corner.

The proposed motorway would start a

from point where West End traffic converges on the Al, near Page Street, pass under the Watford by-pass and rejoin it again near its junction with the A5 at Brockley Hill. The road would have dual carriageways and would cross under or over all existing roads without any intermediate junctions or access points. It is estimated to cost some £3m.

MAIDSTONE BY-PASS PROGRESS WORK on the Maidstone by-pass, VY which will cost £2,300,000, is nearing completion. The eastern section, costing £11m., should be open to traffic by the end of March and the complete road by mid-July. There are eight bridges in the 51 miles eastern section, which extends from Hollingbourne to the Maidstone and Chatham road. Five of the road bridges are almost finished and the bridge over the Maidstone-Dover 'railway awaits the placing of the main girders.
