Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TW0 new prime-movers for use with articulated units have been introduced by Dodge Bros. (Britain), Ltd., Kew Gardens, Surrey. Both are derived from the current forward-control range of medium-weight chassis and the tractors are rated for gross train weights of 16 tons or 18 tons according to the type of rear axle. They give approximate payloads of 10 tons and 12 tons respectively.

Both chassis have a wheelbase of 8 ft. 4 in. and there is a choice of two power units: the Leyland 0.350 or Perkins R.6 six-cylindered oil engines. These have power outputs of 105 b.h.p. at 2,400 r.p.m. and 104 b.h.p. at 2,500 r.p.m. respectively, the relative torque outputs being 255 lb.-ft. at 1.400 r.p.m. and 240 lb.-ft. at 1,625 r.p.m.

With both engines a live-speed constantmesh gearbox is employed, with forward ratios of 7,08, 3.78, 2.24, 1.47 and 1 to I. The reverse ratio is 7.01 to 1. The I6-ton-gross chassis has a single-speed spiral-bevel axle as standard, with a ratio of 6.16 to 1. As optional equipment an Eaton 16800 two-speed axle with ratios of 5.62 and 7.81 to 1 can also be supplied 'to operators.

Chassis rated for 18 tons gross have an Eaton 18500 two-speed axle with ratios of 6.51 and 8.87 to I. When the singlespeed axle is fitted the standard tyres are 7.50-20 in. (12-ply), whilst 8.25-20 in. (12-ply) tyres are employed on the 12-ton tractor.

Girling two-leading-shoe hydraulic brakes give a total frictional area of 480 sq. in. The standard servo is a tandem Hydrovac unit, but a Clayton Dewandre air-pressure servo can be supplied for use with air-braked semi-trailers.

The fin.-thick chassis frame side members have a maximum depth of 811in., with 3-in.-wide flanges. Both chassis are suitable for use with conventional fifthwheel couplings, and can accommodate semi-trailers up to 26 ft. long. These are the first tractor models to be based on the Dodge forward-control range, which was introduced last year.
