Transport how — with a laimed 35% el saving. Andy alter reports.

AT THE EUROPEAN Road Transport Show (TERTS) later this month Renault will take the wraps off an environmentally efficient concept vehicle, the Hybrys, said to offer a 35% fuel saving. Seizing on the vogue for all things 'green'. the Hybrys features a futuristic design and hybrid drivelines, giving an indication of Renault's thinking in this arena.

The Hybrys broke cover at the Amsterdam show as a refuse truck: it is intended for urban applications. The asymmetrical radiator grille gives drivers and passengers exceptional visibility, while the 'soft-edged' design is intended to reduce the vehicle's environmental impact by cutting drag. Front and rear-view cameras are integrated into the cab, while the steps, which retract into the cab on the passenger side, offer easy access for multi-drop applications. Let's hope they are more successful than Scania's attempt at retractable steps with the original 4-Series.

While the interior won't be to everyone's tastes, particularly with this colour scheme, the two-screen layout of the dash is an interesting development. The main screen behind the steering wheel provides crucial driving information such as speed, revs, fluid levels, current gear and environmental performance; the second screen is for ancillary equipment such as the rear-view camera and other operational information. Renault includes the navigation screen in this second category; we'd have preferred a bolder approach. After all, navigation is of more immediate use to the driver than gear engaged or engine revs.

The forward-view screen and the two rear-view screens, which replace traditional mirrors, are integrated into the console under the ledge over the driver's head. A series of task-specific controls are integrated into the dashboard where they are easy to access, making the driver's life easier.

The automated gearbox control is under the steering wheel.
