Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

LEYLAND-BASED transmission manufacturer Torotrak has signed a licensingdeal to provideTata Motors with its innovative Infinitely VariableTransmission(IVT).

Torotrak reports that in tests at Millbrook in an Optare midibus, IVT cut urban-route fuel use by 19% compared with a conventional live-speed automatic box. The Tata deal covers transmissions for cars, light CVs, medium and heavy CVs and plant.

The Indian giant recently acquired steel maker Corns; it is widely expected to be the next owner of Ford's Jaguar and Land Rover brands.

IVT is based around the 'toroidal varia tor' that features opposing concave driving and driven discs connected by a roller. Swivelling the roller changes the points of contact on the curved internal walls, thus changing the effective diameters of the driving and driven discs.

The concept is well proven in agricultural machines, and IVT is said to be particularly well suited to use in hybrid drivelines.
