The key is experience. You must be an expert in your field with a strong background of achievement, clear success, and budgetary and people responsibility. It also helps if you have worked for various companies, as the broader your skills and experience the more you have to offer. You have to price yourself appropriately, too, as there may be periods of unemployment between positions.
The IMA emphasises that interim management is a career choice, rather than something to do while you're searching for a permanent job. One interim manager told CM: "The day-to-day running of things bores me, frankly, but I enjoy change or solving problems. Then there comes a point when it's best to transfer responsibility to someone who is good at having a steady hand on the tiller."
