RE:`OWEN ASKS EC to back plan for A55 truckstop' (CM 20 September).

I am writing on behalf of the STAG3 I action group which represents the local communities whose opposition to the proposal is intense, and virtually unanimous, because it would seriously damage the quality of their lives and bring no benefit to the community or Flintshire.

Flintshire County Council's Unitary Development Plan does not state that there should be a truckstop on the A55, but if one is proposed the first requirement is that it should be on an industrial (brownfield) site. This proposal is half a mile from the A55 on the B5122 on a greenfield site, adjacent to an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. on the North Wales ScenicTour, and would funnel traffic through the 13th Century town of C.aerwys.

Western Flintshire is a tourist and agricultural area. Eastern Flintshire is industrialised. The width of the county is only 16 miles, so nobody has to travel too far to work.

Unemployment in Flintshire is 2%; in the area of the proposed development, unemployment is 0.6% That is, only 12 people are out of work.Where does Mr Owen think the other 488 people to staff his project are going to come from?

As to the requirement for a secure truckstop supported by the attack on one of Mr Owen's drivers: if drivers are going to flood to use them, then why did Mr Owen's driver pass the secure truckstop on the M6 and come off to use a lay-by on an adjacent Aroad where he was attacked? The truth is that drivers are under pressure to maximise driving time, and are modestly paid, so a cost-free stop in one of the many lay-bys on the A55 will remain the priority for most truckers on the way to and from Ireland, which accounts for 80% of the truck traffic.

The proposal is not to do with the welfare of truckers or the people of Caenvys but for the personal gain of Mr Owen. The EC. the local Chamber of Commerce, the CBI. the United Transport Union and the Road Haulage Association should recognise this and not give it their support.
