Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Running at the new top weight limit can certainly boost a vehicle's payload potential, but tlyva warns that not all rams are capable of lifting 44 tonnes.

Eye-mounted installations increase the buckling force exerted on the tipping ram, so it is essential for operators to check that their trailers are equipped with tipping gear that can safely handle the higher loads encountered at 44 tonnes.

tlyva's standard FE 183 cylinder with standard 167-litre ail tanks successfully passed tests for mechanical buckling capacity and hydraulic thrust at 44 tonnes, at loadings typically encountered in eye-end applications, where the gear locates in a pocketed headboard or dogbox within the body. Wet kits also need checking: oil capacities may have to be increased to handle the extra thrust.

Another important advantage of eye-end tipping-gear installations is the narrower gap between body and cab. Ilyva rams provide this, as do underfloor tipping gears.

Underfloor specialist Harsh says tests conducted on its behalf by MIRA revealed that the Harsh sheeting system with a 12in radiused camber, contributed 6.5% to fuel economy, while closing the gap between tractor and trailer from 24in to lie enhanced economy a further 3%.

Harsh says for a tipper covering 50,00 miles a year the combined savings can equate to 12,500 per vehicle.
