A building company from Newport has blamed its former mainte ance contractor for the prob?,ms found on its only
Davlan Construction had een called before the Welsh raffle Commissioner David ixon at a Pontypool discipliary inquiry.
Vehicle examiner Chris Enea eported that the maintenance f the vehicle was entrusted to a aulier in Newport, but the vehile was issued with several proibitions, a large number of /hich, he said, showed a signifiant maintenance failure. The hearing was told how some of the prohibitions related to the condition of the brakes, and another problem was a tyre found to be below the legal minimum tread depth.
Director Kevin Cook said he was responsible for the vehicle, but explained that he was a carpenter by trade and had no background in transport. Money was not the reason for the vehicle being in the condition it was in—he had trusted the contractor to do a proper job.
"The cost of a tyre is nothing to us," he said. "We just wanted the vehicle to be roadworthy."
Speaking for the company Tim Pratt said that the old vehicle had been disposed of and the company was negotiating the purchase of a new lorry, with the dealer contracted to carry out the preventative maintenance.
All the drivers had now been told verbally and in writing to carry out daily walk-round checks and they had all signed forms of responsibility
The TO issued Davlan Construction with a formal warning but added: "I do believe the directors have realised the seriousness of what has gone on in the past and that they are taking proper steps."
