Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• by Kevin Swallow The Government-backed TransportAction group has launched a new system which will allow fleet operators to apply for block grants for "cleanfuel" vehicles.

The system means contract-hire and rental companies, as well as some manufacturers and conversion companies, can apply for block vehicle grants and pass them on directly to customers in the form of reduced prices and cheaper rental.

Director of TransportAct ion Jonathan Murray says the system is designed to encourage more "cleanfuel" vehicles into the commercial marketplace. Grants are worth between 40 and 75% of the conversion cost or the difference in price between a new clean-fuel vehicle and its petrol or diesel equivalent.

Vehicles must be less than one year old and must have covered less than 25,000 miles and, appear must as an approved model on the Pewershift Register. TransportAction says applications will be turned around in five working days. Contact: www.transportactlen.erg.uk.

• Next week CM will be publishing a Scania threehorse fuel comparison race between trucks powered by diesel, CNG and LNG.
