• County Durham association of parish councils has called for an amendment of the law to allow GPO mail buses to operate in areas where there are also private bus operators. The association was told that people living in upper Teesdale could not have a mail bus service because of an anomaly in the law.

Some time ago the Postmaster-General agreed to provide a service but there was opposition from an operator who runs a onceweekly bus service. Mr. F. Bickerton lof Whorlton parish council) claimed that it was farcical that the PMG could be frustrated by a private operator in this way.
