T°"Y to attract people to public transport services from private cars on daily journeys to and from work, the City of New York is to build a £143m. road tunnel under the Hudson River. Since 1950, passenger traffic on trams has dropped by 78 per cent. and on the buses by 28 per cent.
Use of the tunnel may enable buses to complete their journeys in times comparable with those taken by cars.
