Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Keywords : Scraper

A TYPE of oil-control ring which PA. comes into full action only after a definite period of running is that known as the Hepolite delayed-action scraper ring. Its design is based on the Hepolite super-drain-oil ring, which combines two high-pressure scraping bands and ample drainage area through wide slots.

To prevent the ring functioning as a scraper when first fitted, a number of flats is machined across its periphery, and these permit of the free passage of oil to the upper rings. In due course, the ring face wears until all the flats are removed and the ring then shows full scraping efficiency.

The time taken for this stage to be reached depends upon the depth of the fiats, and it is this feature which can be varied to suit the conditions.

It should be understood that this delayed-action ring does not replace the usual type of scraper ring and is essentially an extra ring. What it does is to provide increased scraper effect at a time when, normally, the engine would probably have to have its ring equipment changed.

The maker is Hepworth and Grandage, Ltd., St.. John's Works, Bradford.
