A Fine Entry of Steam Wagons. Improved Method of Judging. Complete Prize List.

THE DOMINANT interest in the Liverpool commercial motor' parade was the excellent turnout of steam wagons, which constituted 50 per cent, of the total entries for the various competitions. About 150 vehicles were entered in the pine classes, but in the parade through the city streets 220

vehicles were' counted. .. •

This year a different method of classification was adopted, based on the age of the vehicle instead of upon the mileage travelled, which was the criterion last year. Each vebicle".was judged on Its merits, whether competing in the single or fleet class, and from the maximum of 1.00 marks deductions were made according to , the condition of (a) steer

ing and front axle (b) engine and transmission, (c) brakes and back axle, (d) body and general, and (e) work done far presentation.

For the 1914 steam vehicle class there were 24 entries ; 1917 steam class, 18 entries ; 1920 steam cla8s5 32 entries. Of these 74 vehicles 40 were Sentinels, 29 Leylands, 3 Podens, I. Atkinson and 1 Clayton. Several of the leading city fitins entered some exdellently conditioned fleets, especially Messrs. Fairrie and Co., Tate and Lyle, Ltd., Thomas Lawrenson and R. Sficock and Sons. In the_steam vehicle fleet competition there were 31 Sentinels, 12 Leylanels, 4 Fodens and 1 Clayton.

Only two petrol vehicles were, entered

in the 1914 class, a Earlier belonging to the Liverpool Co-operative Society and a Leyland belonging to W. and R. Jacobs and Co. Ltd. In the 1917 class there were 4 'MaudsIa.y, 2 Austin, 2 G.M.C., 1 Commer, 1 Harrier, 1 Belsize and I Straker-Squire vehicles (the only char-a-bancs in the parade; belonging to Alfred Harding, of Birkenhead). The 1920 class attracted A.-fine display of Leylands, and G. Wall and Co., Ltd., again won well-merited distinction. The entries summarized were :-13 Leylands, 3 Dennis, 3 Thornycroit, 3 Caledon, 2 Albion, 2 Ildaudslay, 1 Austin, 1 Pagefield, 1 A.E.C., 1 Hallford and 1 G.M.C. In the petrol fleet class, Geo. Wall and Co., Ltd., carried off the two

highest awards with fleets of 3 Leylands and 2 Leylands and a Dennis. A six ton Electromobile was entered by Tate and Lyle, Ltd., and was awarded a first prize against two Ward electrics entered by J. Blake and Co.

Conversation with the judges. revealed their entire satisfaction at the excellence of the parade. The vehicles in their general appearance were much smarter looking than last year. Many of them had been newly painted, 4nd one firm— Tate and Lyle, Ltd.—who eecolour was Royal blue, had their drivers and second men in uniforms and peaked caps of a corresponding colour. An outstanding feature was the strong entry of haulage contractors. In every respect was the organization of the parade an improvement on last year, and dna of the little things that was appreciated by the drivers was the provision of a travelling coffee-shop on the parade ground.

Only one vehicle, according to the official prize list, succeeded in obtainin the full 100 marks, this, a Leyland 1 steam wagon, belonging to Fairrie and Co. and driven by E. Redmond and T. Samuelson (assistant). An eleven-year_ old Sentinel belonging to the Wallasey Haulage Go., and entered in the 1914 class, had to its credit 109,700 miles.
