Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Medical intervention

I READ WITH interest Dan Carter's letter (CM 23 September) regarding the UK's position on HGV drivers and type-1 diabetics.

I was diagnosed with type-I diabetes two years ago and my HGV C+E licence was revoked. Luckily, my job is selling HGVs and not driving them. I can understand Dan's frustrations as this has limiting effects on my role as a sales manager, let alone anyone whose job is lost.

I look after my health through diet and exercise, and regularly visit healthcare professionals who are happy with the way I manage my diabetes. While I understand the compli cations the government has in being accountable for letting poorly controlled diabetics drive an HGV and any consequences, it is unfair on those who look after themselves to be penalised under a one-size-tits-all umbrella.

Dan's point on the general state of the health of many drivers is a pertinent one. I know a few HGV C and C+E licence holders who have suffered heart and angina attacks and undergone surgery. These guys seem to get their licences back yet some have had further medical complications. Let the medical professionals assess who they feel is fit and in control of their diabetes on an annual basis. I would pay for the privilege not to rely on others as much as I do.

I would back Dan's petition and feel the government should review this issue and scrap its half-hearted proposal of a 12-tonne gross limit. Steve Moon Regional sates manager
