Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Everyone's at risk from 'hot' property unless we have trailer registration believes one Welsh dealer.

The image of the used CV sector could be enhanced if trailers were properly registered to stop less scrupulous dealers selling stolen trailers to operators.

That's the opinion of operator Steve Merle who runs a small operation in south Wales and says he is battling against "more ruthless setups" that are willing to risk picking up cheaper stolen trailers to make ends meet. "The current system isn't tight enough," he warns.

Merle bought three curtain-sided trailers from an independent dealer who had a job lot."One of my drivers was stopped with a trailer we had bought from a reputable dealer," he reports. "They were about right on price for standard triaxle curtainsiders, five years-old and with no decals."

The trailers were found to be legal but Merle believes his driver was stopped by the South Wales police because they were sure his trailers were stolen.

"We need registration, like the V5 for vehicles," he says. "The trailers had lobe traced through their previous owner before we were in the clear.A simple DVLA registered format would make it easier for the police too. but it's not happening.

"There must be hundreds if not thousands of trailers across the country that are stolen and given new identities but a V5 equivalent would sort it out. It would certainly give me piece of mind.because if my trailers had been stolen I would have lost a lot of money." •
