Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

brake friction

Lining choice is a vital issue for both brake effectiveness and performance. Make sure you get it right!

CONFIDENCE: That's the key element for both the haulage operator and commercial vehicle workshop manager when fitting replacement brake friction to a tractor unit or trailer. And for a supplier, such as Ferodo, it begins instilling confidence in its product right at the very beginning in advanced research and development, before the brake lining is even specified as original equipment to a foundation brake manufacturer and/or vehicle assembler.

The fact remains that Ferodo, as an original equipment (OE) supplier, is able to offer whatever brake linings it supplies as OE to the independent aftermarket. The same linings, produced in the same factories are supplied for both OE and replacement fitment: it's been a long-term policy of Ferodo, which as it enters its 103rd year has always been more used to looking ahead to the future. And remember, some of the best known names in the motor industry take Ferodo linings and pads as OE: for example, Mercedes-Benz on its flagship Actros truck.

Indeed, Ferodo ceased to manufacture linings containing asbestos almost two years ago. With asbestos-free (AF) friction materials now fitted to 100 percent of the trucks and trailers manufactured in Europe, brake development using asbestos materials had completely ceased. But, in fact, it's only now that its use has been banned in the UK although, under the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations (1987), it's been illegal to replace AF linings with those containing asbestos since the late 1980s.

'With our asbestos-free linings both operators, and their workshops, know that on first and all subsequent re-lines they'll retain original equipment compatibility: says Bryan Knott, Ferodo's technical services manager. Such corn patibility in linings provides the correct friction levels and balanced braking with all systems, including anti-lock braking (ABS) and braking by wire!

To meet the needs of both its OE customers and the after market, Ferodo offers a range of 12 dedicated material 0 types to fit a variety of drum foundation brake systems, and therefore, applications, on the 10111roads today. In addition, it pro duces a further 12 CV disc pad material types to its current generation of AF linings. And it's worth remembering that compatibility between the friction material of the pad, and the matching surface, ie the brake rotor (disc), is critical too. When developing its linings, Ferodo takes into consideration the metallurgical relationship between the materials in the pad and those used in the rotor too.

'This relationship will enhance both the life of the friction material and the

WHICH CV DISTRIBUTOR

The Ferodo CV distributor network covers the entire British Isles so operators can always have their needs serviced — even in an emergency. All its CV distributors have a wealth of experience and expert knowledge of brake systems and their components. They are also fully supported by the Ferodo Technical Hotline and its 'in-fieid' service engineers.

Distributors are required to provide a fast response time, plus the quality service which is the right of every operator. They offer a complete range of braking products, covering the most up-to-date vehicle pare requirements and operate a Ferodo quality assured relining process utilising the latest pneumatic workshop equipment.

An extensive training programme, with regular reviews, is part of their commitment to the product.

Ferodo distributors make sure that only shoes of serviceable quality are used for relining to ensure safety and optimum braking performance.

mating surface the rotor as well as bedding-in and all the performance characteristics required during the life of the components: says Bryan Knott.

Ferodo is now manufacturing its fourth generation AF linings, and has pioneered designs and materials which have completely overcome the objections raised when AF first became available.

'Our AF products actually out-perform the old asbestos linings, even in adverse operating conditions,' says Bryan Knott,'It is simply no longer true that asbestos-free is unkind to drums. They are entirely devoid of metallic abrasives and run with, rather than against, the drum surfaces!

Consider their advantages: Braking performance is consistent across the entire range of speed, temperature and pressure. Reduced noise and fade resistance are accompanied by longer service life, And operators gain a first-time, every-time brake test pass rate (assuming the brake system is serviceable) and benefit from the most environmentallyfriendly materials in today's market.

Remember that a delivery truck or bus can leave a garage first thing in the morning initially at ambient temperature. But within a couple of stops the brake system can be operating at between 200 and 250degreesC, cycling up and down during the day.

As Bryan Knott says: 'What CV operators and workshops don't want to see is that, when a drum is pulled it's been damaged due to high temperatures caused by poor, lesser quality, AF materials. Our components are designed to withstand maximum continuous temperatures together with the more usual intermittent termperature peaks, for example, on the motorway or in urban conditions: Ferodo also has field service engineers ready and available to visit operators to make a simple brake health check through to a comprehensive brake compatibility evaluation. There's also a technical hotline: 01274 848283. Plus, an additional bonus for operators and their workshops, is the provision of a 'wear step' indicator to help eliminate premature re-lining.

This total support philosophy reflects its mission in every other area of its activities: to maintain a constant dialogue with both operators and drivers, listening to their needs in which operational costs are paramount but where driver comfort and safety are just as relevant. With the sale of a component it's just the start of a working relationship designed to be mutually beneficial: to ensure that operators derive maximum performance from the friction materials fitted to their vehicles.

And remember, today's operator views will invariably end up as tomorrow's specialist products. Again, this is where Ferodo scores over its rivals because of its long-term, more than 30 years, experience with asbestos-free linings. In short, Ferodo AF linings are a technological advance on the old asbestos products.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR Workshops need to look for the following criteria when selecting replacement friction material and related braking components.

Friction materials which are asbestos-free (now law) and, therefore. OE compatible; Product that gives an economical life; Serviceable brakes, when required, can have the linings replaced which will enable a pass for the annual Dtp test; Rotors (discs) which are OE compatible; Damage does not occur to the rotors because there is an economical balance between the friction material and its 'mating surface',

SPOTTING HEAT DAMAGE Evidence of thermal damage to brake parts can include: Blue spotting (a visible sign that they have been overheating); Heat cracked/checked drums (which have an adverse affect on lining life because they cut into it like a machine tool).

Operators are unlikely to see such damage when using Ferodo materials and components.

LININGS FOR PCV OPERATORS Recognising that bus and coach operators encounter totally different duty cycles, Ferodo developed a range of linings and pads specially-designed for PCV use.

PCV vehicle cycles feature bulk temperatures throughout the operating day and therefore need a material to cope with that environment. Ferodo offers a range of specific PCV formulations, extensively tested in partnership with PCV operators.

Other friction manufacturers merely adapt truck products. Ferodo PCV products can be recognised by a unique PCV edge marking.
