by Brian Weatherley • Iveco's Spanish division Iveco Pegaso is to develop a new family of large displacement high-power engines, which are expected to appear in Iveco heavy trucks in time for Euro-3 emissions legislation before the turn of the century.

All the development work will be carried out at Pegaso's Barcelona engineering division, with the new family likely to replace the existing Iveco vee-eight 17.2-litre engine currently used in the EuroStar rated at 383kW (514hp).

Emission barrier Although the vee engine is already capable of meeting the Euro-2 emission barrier, due in 1995/96, Iveco is clearly looking beyond it. The Italian truck maker is giving away few details on the new range although it may decide to switch from a vee configuration to a straight-six in order to save weight and cost.

Iveco Pegaso's director of marketing Manuel Lage Marco says that the new engines: "Will be brand new, built up from scratch."

In addition to its work on the new big diesels, Pegaso's Barcelona engineering centre will work closely with Iveco's main engine development divison, Iveco Motorenforschung in Arbon, Switzerland.
