by Brian Weatherley • MAN is offering a new 198kW (265hp) variant of its six-cylinder M90 chassis called the 17.272.
It will be offered as a 4x2 and 6x2 tag-axle solo/drawbar rigid or a 4x2 tractor, with a choice of day and sleeper cabs.
MAN is also dropping the 198kW (265hp) five-cylinder diesel from its F90 truck line-up.
However,the five-pot 10 litre engine will still he offered at 235kW (320hp) in F90 chassis.
By using the 6.87-litre charge-cooled six and M90 cab MAN has been able to cut the new 17.272's kerbweight by up to a tonne compared with the old F90 17.272 chassis.
The 6.87-litre engine has the same power as the 10litre five-pot but delivers less torque-960Nm (7081hft) against the 10litre's 1,130Nm (8331b11). The 17.272's six-cylinder engine is fitted with a turbocharger wastegate to limit boost pressure. The high-power M90 variant was launched at the 1992 Hanover Show; it was previously used on the Continent in M90 lightweight rigids and tractors.
However MAN has now decided to offer it as a right-hooker for 1994.
