• The Scottish Joint Industrial Council, the last bastion of national collective bargaining in haulage, looks set to be weakened next year as the commitment of Transport Development Group companies to the body falters.

The Transport and General Workers Union says TDG's Inter-City Transport will cease to agree to recommendations from the joint TGWU and employers advisory body. And Ralph Taylor, managing director of fellow TOG company McKelvie & Co, says he is "considering" the company's position and its future involvement in the Scottish JIC.

The two companies employ a total of about 600 staff in both Scotland and England.

Last year the Scottish JIC agreed a £5.50 increase for LGV drivers working a 40-hour week while the regional English JICs recommended a pay freeze.

TGWU full-time officer at Grangemouth Archie Wilson says: "It's bad news that the national agreement is appearing to disintegrate".
