With the Fleetmaster, Fodens longer fit in-house cornnents. Instead the company is r.rg proprietary units in order get maximum benefit from ; new assembly plant without er-loading the Foden cornnent manufacturing facilities. Left and right-hand models ; being offered with either a y or sleeper-cab, but which II in either case have a wheelso of 3.43m (lift 3in).

One of two 216kW (290bhp) :bochargecl diesel engines can specified — the 14-litre mmins or the 12-litre Rollsyce.

Both are available with a 3rmostatically controlled fan lich cuts in at 35°C and is Ily operational at 65. It is rimed to reduce noise, save iwer and extend fan-belt life. A Fuller range-change arbox with a 1 to 1 top gear io drives through to an 11.5

rifle (11.3-ton) singleluction, 3.7 to 1, Rockwell ;r axle equipped with Rockill brakes.

While a Foden 6.61-tonne .5-ton) axle is used at the )nt, the models are so equipped with )ckwell cam:pending rn-servo ading / ;iling

rake luipment. Long-life Imm iin) ick rings are ipplied within 6 419mm 61/2in) x 200mrn in) drums all round. The chassis is instructed from 54mm deep x 8mm ick (10in x 0.3in) lannel side members ith 90mm (31/2in) flanges ter-stressed with full

depth fabricated crossmembers. The chassis opens out at the front to provide a wider base for the 1,500mm (63in) taper-leaf hydraulically damped springs.

At the rear 1650mm (6.5in) long x 90mm (31/2in) wide taper-leaf springs supplemented by helpers are overslung to add to the roll stiffness.

A split front to rear air-line system supplies air to spring chambers which in the event of a failure in the service line will serve as the emergency system. But their prime purpose is to provide two-axle park braking.

An engine exhaust brake actuated by the first movement of the service brake pedal is interlocked with the accelerator so that both cannot function at the same time; when the engine drops below 900rprn the exhaust brake is automatically cut out.

All electrical cables run through conduits, and this eliminates chafing and provides extra protection against the weather. A master cut-off switch fitted to the chagsis and circuit breakers conforms with the Petroleum Regulations requirements.

Beth the day and the sleeper 2.16m (7ft 1in) wide all-steel cabs tilt hydraulically through 65 degrees without the steering-column or the gear linkage being disconnected. No manual locking or unlocking of the cab is required because the mechanism is operated by the tilt pump.

A warning is supplied within the cab should the securing latches fail to engage.

There is no need to tilt the cab, however, for the normal day to day service checks of radiator, washer and oil levels. These are housed behind a front-mounted grille along with the .windscreen wiper drive, twin heaters, pedal linkage and air-pressure switches.

Inside the cab, three recessed sun visors extend the • full width above the windscreen. Ventilation is provided via twin fresh air vents in the !header rail and a Happich roof-vent. Quarter lights are incorporated in the door windows.

Instrumentation includes gauges for air on every circuit — oil pressure, temperature and fuel. A bank of warning lamps is fitted in strip form while a tachograph and rev counter take central positions in front of t driver's seat.

Heater controls, group within easy reach, are mount on the side of a console on 1 forward part of engine tunn which also has provision to sti papers and flasks.

Both axles, mounted on 1 ladder-type chassis support by semi-elliptic multi-k springs, are of Foden -manuf ture and carry 178mm (7 wide brakes.

The rear axle, rated at 10. tonnes (10 tons), incorporate 2 to 1 hub reduction with differential lock available as option.

Choice of engines is exti sive and includes the Cumm • NHC 250, Rolls-Royce 265 a the Gardner 6LXA 180 or 8L 240.

A Foden 431mm (17 single-plate clutch is coupled the Foden eight-speed rani change gearbox, with the Fu RTO 9509A gearbox availa as an option.

Extra insulation below 1 cab and beneath the trim claimed to reduce inside sot. levels to 78DBA at cruisi speeds.
