Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE Transport Tribunal in London last week reserved judgment when Williams Bros., of Alyndene, Treuddyn, near Mold, appealed against a decision of the North Western Licensing Authority that existing facilities for the carriage of livestock were adequate. Williams Bros., it was stated, applied for A licences for three 13-ton platform vehicles and three Sir-ton containers to be based at Trefnant, Denbighshire, for "livestock, agricultural produce, requisites and general goods for carriage iii Wales and neighbouring counties," Eventually they abandoned "general goods" and the appeal proceeded on the basis of the application being for livestock only.

There were 18 objectors—the British Transport Commission and 17 hauliers.

Mr. J. Edward Jones, for Williams Bros.. said that many of the objectors were between 15 and40 miles away from Trefnant as the crow flies and much farther by road. The service, he claimed, was already operating and had 120 customers.

Mr. Pritchard Jones, representing the 17 hauliers, submitted that there was no real evidence of need. The objectors had facilities available.

• Mr. James Amphlett, for the B.T.C., said thaf if the appeal were allowed, the Tribunal would be setting a "very dangerous precedent."
