CONSERVAT1VE back-bench opinion was firmly in favour of the abolition of the levy., our political correspondent reported on Wednesday.

It . is expected that the Minister of Transportwill shortly meet the Conservative Transport Committee to acquaint them with the contents of the new Transport Bill. No date for its publication has yet been mentioned.

At that meeting, he' will no doubt be urged to end the levy as quickly as possible. • £25,000 MORE REVENUE FOR WALLASEY

FARE increases estimated to produce an extra £25,000 a year were granted to' Wallasey Transport Department by the North Western Licensing Authority on Monday. The application proposed the withdrawal of workers' fares' and the addition of Id. to 24d. and 34d, rates and Id. to higher fares.

The increases will also apply to the joint services ran by Birkenhead Corporation. Crosville Motor Services,. Ltd., were granted similar increases in respect of four. independent services running into Wallasey.

It was stated that an extra £13,000 a year had been expected from the last fare increases, introduced in 1954, but the yield was only £6,950. In the year 1954-55, the undertaking had a deficit of £2,200. Because of the good weather last summer receipts this year were expected to be up by about £11,000, but private-hire revenue was down by £4,600 and expenditure had risen by more than 114,000.

A deficit of £17,000-£18,000 was expected at the end of this year, and if the current application for higher wages were granted in full, it would cost an additional £29,000 a year.

LEEDS SEEKS CHEAP-FARE POWERS

ACLAUSE which would allow couneil members to enjoy cheap fares is included in the Leeds Corporation Parliamentary Bill, which is to be presented to the city .council on November 16.

It is also -proposed that the corporation should contribute towards the cost incurred by other transport .organizations' which might grantconcessions in the city, as provided by the Bill. These would apply at certain hours to old, blind and disabled persons, and children between 15 and 19 years of age undertaking full-time education.

ECONOFREIGHT APPEAL AN appeal by Econofreight Transport, Ltd., against the Northern Deputy Licensing Authority's refusal to grant them six additional tippers of 8 tons each under an A licence came before the Transport Tribunal in London on Wednesday. All the 31 hauliers, as well as the British Transport Commission, who originally objected to the application, were respondents.
