six-wheeled tankers used for the transport of aviation spirit are being made by Messrs. Kensington Service Garage, Queen's Gate Mews, London, S.W.7. One of these machines recently inspected by "The Commercial Motor" had been converted for the transport of edible fats, the bulk of the work involved being concerned with the tank.
In the first place its capacity was increased from 2,500 gallons to 3,000 gallons by adding to its length. This, in turn, meant increasing the length of the chassis side members. which was done by bolting 4-ft. lengths of channel steel to their after end s. The interior of the tank was treated in conformity with the regulations governing the bulk transport of edible liquids.
As used during the war, these tanks were unlagged, but; as converted, the outside is covered With. a2-in, layer of Cork, which, in turn, is encased with 18-gauge aluminium sheet.
.Provision is .made for reducing the viscosity of the load for easy »discharge by introducing a V-shaped .pipe whiCh runs along the full length of the tank. To heat the contents, should it be too thick to run easily, steam is introduced into one end of the pipe and exhausted from the other.
The appearance of the rear wings has been improved by the addition of valances, whilst the front wings have been extended ..circumferentially and blend with the lines of the cab, which is now fall fronted. T h 1 s restyling involved bringing the Autovac inside the cab.
As the vehicle will
be operatedin this country by Merseyside 'Food Products, Ltd., Liverpool, 20, the effective area of the tropical-type radiator has been reduced by" blanking off aportion. at the rear.
