The Sampson Inner Tube Repair Hit.

Brown Bros., Ltd., Great Eastern Street., London, EC., has recently sent to us particulars of the Sampson inner tube repair kit which it is marketing. The complete outfit consists of a neat case containing a combination cutting and expanding tool, together with a number of Sampson inner tube plugs. It is claimed that this device can be used effectively for repairing punctures in the inner tubes of pneumatic tires. It certainly possesses an advantage in that it is not necessary to wait for patches to dry before using the tube again. The Sampson plug sets as a clamp, holding the portion of punctured tube between its two main parts, but it in no way affects the resiliency of the tire. Further nartieulars of this repair outfit can be obtained at the address given above.

A New Hollings and Guest Tire Press.

A convenient garage fitting for a large user of solidtired commercial vehicles is certainly some kind of tire press. If he is in possession of such an accessory, he is saved the. not inconsiderable delay which frequently ensues as a result of having to send his machines away for some distance from his establishment in order to have the wheels re-shod.

A concern which has specialized in the production of this sort of equipment for garages and workshops for some considerable time past is Hollings and Guest, Lid., Thimble Mill Lane, Birmingham. This company has recently introduced an entirely new type of hydraulic tire press, which is stated to be eminently suitable for use in changing the tires of the heavier

types of commercial vehicles. It is claimed to be a. great improvement upon any class of press now on the market.

The chief feature about this new press is that it is fitted with four columns, which consequently allow the weight to be distributed more evenly over the tables. It will be noticed from our illustration reproduced herewith that the height of the press has been considerably reduced, so that the need for laying down expensive foundations is quite unnecessary. The two features are entirely new. Another important point in this new design is the machined guides for the table which are provided on the columns. By this means the possibility of tipping, which takes place not infrequently with some other types of presses, is eliminated. The top is fitted with tee slots, by which the tire blocks can be suspended while the wheel is being set. Circular rings are provided on the table of the press so that the wheel can he placed concentrically with the ram. Our illustration shows the press fitted with the company's well-known double-hand pumps. We understand, however, that power pumps can be fitted if desired.

A runway is attached to the press, by means of which one man can lift a wheel, weighing up to half a ton, from the ground, and then easily push it into the press and place on the blocks. Without this attachment it would often require three or four men to do a similar job. This new press is substantially constructed but is reasonably light, which enables the equipment to be easily handled for transport purposes. The company makes this press in the usual sizes up to 150 tons pressure, but they can he made to take a higher pressure if necessary. Hollings and Guest, Ltd., manufactures a number of other specialities which are particularly suitable for the builder and user of commercial vehicles.
