Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Brake, the campaign for lorry safety, has secured £25,000 from the road transport industry in a move which has secured its future for at least the next year.

The £5,000 sponsorship from hauliers Transport Development Group, TNT, Eddie Stobart, Wincanton and truck manufacturer Iveco Ford comes just two and a half months after the pres.sure group's launch.

The endorsement from the sponsors will be aired at press conferences planned over the next fortnight, when Brake will publicise its link-up with lorry operators through a "National Lorry Safety Day".

lveco Ford is expected to provide two vehicles for a central London venue. Brake campaign director Mary Williams hopes senior management from all four hauliers will accompany some of their vehicles at other meetings hoped for in Humberside, Derbyshire and Yorkshire.

Williams says: "Our sponsors are supporting us because they understand the desperate need for lorry safety to get to the top of the political agenda. They all believe there are severe weaknesses with the present enforcement arrangements."

Brake is calling for more resources to improve Vehicle Inspectorate enforcement, tougher penalties from the courts, better driver training and new legislation to allow the impounding of lorries running without operator's licences.

Plans to lobby for six-monthly checks on brakes, steering and speed limiters have been put on the back burner.
