According to a survey conducted by hazardous goods carrier JW Suckling, only 4% of respondents in the hazardous goods industry are familiar with NEN2726, the Dutch standard that is forming the basis of an EC standard, currently working its way through Brussels.

Suckling says adoption of a specific hazgoods standard "can enhance the level of service and reduce the number of service failures. We have seen a considerable and quantifiable reduction in the number of operational safety incidents since achieved registration to NEN2726 last year," says Suckling director Peter Lamer. we

:Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser Directive

Transport operators must appoint a trained dangerous goods safety adviser, probably to start in 1999. The safety officer, who doesn't have to be employed full time, will ensure that hauliers take steps to avoid accidents and that all employees are properly trained and safety drills and equipment checks are carried out.

They will also draw up annual reports on their employers' activities for the Health and Safety Executive.
