Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AT their meeting in London last week the National Council for the Omnibus Industry adopted the special committee's report on improvements in wages and working conditions in the provincial bus companies, and recommended adoption of the agreement" reached by the committee.

There were five separate improvements included in the agreement:— 1. A rise of 6s. a week in the basic weekly wage rates. of all staff covered— drivers, conductors, skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled maintenance men.

2. An addition of £2 a year to the annual holiday pay to all staff with a minimum of 12 months' service, except for skilled maintenance men in central workshops.

3. Time and 4' half to be paid and a day off to be given in lieu for all work performed on a day declared by proclamation to be a public holiday.

4. Improvements in the conditions covering the payments to drivers and conductors for extra time worked through delays in service through fog, snow or other unavoidable causes.

5. Improvement in the special rate of pay for one-man-operated buses. The 15 per cent, premium to drivers will be paid at the higher rate obtainable on the day instead of at the basic rate. This will give higher pay on Sundays, for instance.

The extra holiday payments will apply to the 1962 holiday period and the other recommendations. will come into force from the beginning of the first full pay period following Thursday last.

But the unions' other demands, for time and a half for Saturday work and for three extra days' holiday after 10 years' service, were rejected.

A national delegate conference, of company busmen were due to discuss the settlement at Transport House yesterday and were expected to endorse it.

The parallel claim by municipal busmen is now expected to make progress; the N.LIC. for the Road Passenger Transport Industry are due to resume discussion of the claim at a meeting later this month..
