Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

SMOKE from diesel vehicles can be caused by the driver illegally misusing the excess-fuel device in order to gain extra power. An injection-pump modification that renders this misuse impossible is disclosed in patent No. 885,812. (C.A.V., Ltd., War* Way, London, W.3.)

Dealing first with the original construction, the control rod carries an abutment collar (1) which normally comes to rest against a pin (2) and so limits the full load fuel. To obtain excess fuel for starting, the driver can slide the pin into a position in which it clears the collar by manipulat

\-. ing a spindle (3). This

permits more leftward movement.

The basis of the present patent is the provision of a small spring-loaded shutter (4). This can be pushed aside by the pin when the engine is to be started, but as soon as the control bar moves rightwards the shutter snaps back and obstructs the slot in the collar, thus frustrating any attempt to obtain excess fuel while the engine is running.

The invention is a development of previous patent No. 760,278.
