Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

trailer is a U.S.L.M. model with a well 17 ft. long.

ATIPPING lorry which within five minutes can be converted into an articulated outfit has been.added to the fleet of J. T. Glover, Ltd., public works contractors, of Moneymore, Northern Ireland. It is based on a standard Comnner 7-ton chassis of 9-ft. 7-in. wheelbase. The Routes TS3 oil engine is fitted, and the vehicle was supplied by A. S. Baird, Ltd., the Rootes main dealers in Belfast.

As a 6-cu.-yd. tipper it normally carries quarry material for building sites and road construction, and averages 19.7 m.p.g. The tipping 'body and runners are mounted on a subframe, which also incorporates a modified Edbro 2 IN tipping gear. When the body and ram are removed an instantaneous coupling disconnects

the tipping gear from the main reservoir.

As the fifth wheel is fitted to the chassis, the Hands drop-frame semitrailer has an S.A.E.-type coupling. The trailer tyres are interchangeable with those of the tippet, so that only one spare wheel need be carried. The In a recent test the articulated vehicle was loaded with a road-laying machine which gave a gross weight of 16* tons. Some 75 miles were covered, mostly on third-class r o ads with many tight corners and a long climb over part of the Sperrin mountains. An accurate fuel-consumption check gave a figure of 14.7 m.p.g. The TS3 engine has a capacity of 3.26 litres and develops 105 b.h.p. at 2,400 r.p.m, Maximum torque is 270 lb.-ft. at 1,200 r.p.m.

J. T. Glover, Ltd., also operate three Comm er Superpoise 57tonners, a Commer 7-ton forward-control petrolengined tipper, and three 7-ton oilengined dumpers, two for continuous off-the-road work.

ABODY to carry a maximum payload of 14 tons and constructed entirely in Timinium aluminium alloy has been built by Holmes (Preston), Ltd., Blackpool Road, Preston. It is mounted on a Leyland Octopus eight-wheeled chassis, and the vehicle is to be operated by T.I. Aluminium, Ltd., the makers of Timirtium.

The design had to make provision for such differing loads as timber cases oi aluminium sheet, foundry billets weighing up to 14 tons, and scrap and swarf. The last-mentioned often contains heavy items, which, being loaded by crane from bins, impose severe localized impact on the body floor.

Despite its heavy-duty construction the complete body weighs only 37 cwt., and contributes notably to fuel

economy. It is 24 ft. 6 in, long by 8 ft. wide by 3 ft. deep, and the floor is bolted direct to the cross-bearers.

The side boards are in three 8-ft. sections, each section consisting of two panels hinged together. Each top panel can be dropped and fixed to the lower one, and the two lowered together as one 18-in. unit Scrap and swarf are segregated, before loading, into three classes, each of which must be kept apart. Consequently the body can be divided into three 8-ft. compartments by means of two rcfnovable partitions of heavy-duty corrugated section. Both these slide into place in channel guides' built into the intermediate pillars.
